Searching Literature with scite

A professor assigns a term paper. What’s your first step?

For most students, the answer is a literature search - looking up scholarly papers on the topic. In this brief guide, we’ll walk you through how scite can help you not only find articles, but how to use it to help you write your paper quickly and efficiently.

Let’s say you are writing a paper on Ego Depletion - the idea that human willpower is a limited resource that can be depleted.

First, you will want to use the scite search features to find relevant articles. There are two primary ways you can search with scite:

searching for papers by their titles, abstracts and other metadata (scite Advanced Search)
searching for papers by searching inside of papers directly (scite Citation Statement Search)

With scite, you can discover papers by whether they have been supported or contrasted by other authors. You will want to ensure that the papers you select are high quality.

What is scite?

In this guide, we'll cover what scite fundamentally does.

scite is a tool which offers a quantitative and qualitative insight into how scientific publications cite each other.

Citations are everywhere. In scientific publishing, they're the mechanism by which we build knowledge; new research often cites existing literature to improve our collective understanding of a topic.

Today when we look at a scientific publication, the main thing discussed is how many times the publication was cited by others. It is purely quantitative, but not all citations are equal. When a paper is cited, there is textual context surrounding why a citation was made that can be inferred from the section the citation was made in, and what is said by the authors in the citing paper.

scite uses access to full-text articles and its deep learning model to tell you, for a given publication:

how many times it was cited by others
how it was cited by others by displaying the text where the citation happened from each citing paper
whether each citation offers supporting or contrasting evidence of the cited claims in the publication of interest, or simply mention it

How a Research Lead Uses scite to Efficiently Conduct Systematic Literature Reviews and Network Meta-Analyses

A research lead at a private company needed to conduct systematic literature reviews and network meta-analyses in rapidly changing disease areas. They also found themselves shifting between multiple disease areas based on new business requirements. Ramping up quickly and staying up to date on all these areas of research proved to be difficult, until they discovered scite.

At a high level, they wanted to perform the following tasks:

Identifying experts in a particular disease area
Discovering and staying up to date on the latest relevant and reliable research
Evaluating the relevance and quality of research, especially in an area that they might have been unfamiliar with

Custom Dashboards are a way of aggregating scite specific Smart Citation data about groups of papers. You can for example see:

How many total supporting, contrasting, and mentioning citations they have received
How many editorial notices they have received
The trends in the scite Index over time for these papers
All of the articles in a table that is sortable and filterable by their citation metrics

It is worth emphasizing that:

Users on a free plan are allowed one custom dashboard with up to 100 DOIs.
Users on a premium plan are allowed an infinite amount of custom dashboards with up to 1,000 DOIs each.
The limit of the number of DOIs is configurable but we ask that you reach out to us to request custom limits so we can better understand your use-case.
